Multistorey Car Park

Apart from the recent additions of the Angel of the North and the Millennium Bridge, Gateshead's best known building is its concrete 1960's multistorey car park - which had a starring role in the 1971 Michael Caine film "Get Carter". For a number of years it has been little used, the top floors have been blocked off and the building has been allowed to deteriorate. It had been announced that it would be demolished in 2001 (along with the indoor market) to make way for a new shopping centre, though it now looks as if the demolition will be somewhat later.

The Restaurant

The large room on top of the Multistorey Car Park was originally supposed to become a restaurant, and it was with this proposed function that it was used in the film "Get Carter", but it never opened and remains unused and derelict. Photographed 13th September 2002
