
George Hawks Statue
George Hawks was the first mayor of Gateshead in 1835, serving two further terms in 1848 and 1849. After his death in 1863, a statue was erected in Windmill Hills park in 1865. It has recently been moved to the entrance of Windmill Hills park following building work. Photographed 19th February 2001

McCoy Monument
Sir John McCoy, a local shipowner, served 8 terms as mayor of Gateshead between 1912 and 1923. This drinking fountain at the junction of Ellison Street and West Street commemorates his wife Rebecca. Photographed 19th February 2001
