Gateshead Quays

The triangle between South Shore Road, Hawks Road and Oakwellgate was once home to John Abbot's Park Iron Works which employed 2000 men, and the Tyne Wire Drawing Company. After Abbot's closed in 1909, a rope works and various smaller engineering companies filled the space, though by the early 1990s the site was mostly derelict and ripe for development. It is now the location of an ambitious project to regenerate this part of Gateshead with many new projects planned, including The Sage Gateshead with its music education centre and international standard concert hall, together with new housing, hotel and leisure developments. These photos show the work in progress.
